I am so glad to know her.
Everything done with good intentions is bound to be good so is what she writes.

I have presently been translating your first book the Brave, an assignment given to me the Assam Publishing Company, Guwahati for its Assamese translation. Thanks so much for giving me the opportunity to explore the sagas and lore of the Army life in an inimitable style of fiction writing possible only to Rachna Bisht Rawat herself.

ma'am you are such a great war journalist. its so important in today's world for the common people who are engrossed in their daily lives, to know about those people who fought for the country. As far as I am concerned, I show my respect to our soldiers by reciting the names of around 400 gallantry award winners in my college in which I am studying mtech in electronics engineering, on every independence and republic day event. I recite these names from my memory only, this feat of mine is now recognised and acclaimed locally at Nagpur, Maharashtra.

Love this site... will be back.
Hope I was not one of those 'temperamental editors'!

Enjoyed reading about your visit to The Lake District. I'm leading a party (20) from my Rotary Club there in June. Sally wants to walk to Top Withens to enjoy the romance of Wuthering Hdeights. I shall have to be her Heathcliffe.

Sadly, though, I could not open your page on Sheila Dikshit, in whose official residence we were last November. Can you re-publish that page, please.

Rachna,
Congratulations. You are too good. Even if i can not write, reading through your stories is always a pleasure. Reading through your Confession ....., about Mun Mos, Nanaji take me too down the proverbial 'memory lane'. 502 CR Apartment is permanently etched in the memory. Looking back to day, it was a pilgrimage to visit 502 CRA with Uma(the maid)always at hand to get you a mug of tea or a meal. I remember Nani remarkable observation; just sitting in the balcony of 5th Floor aprtment, she knew which car inthe parking belongs to which person and where he/she lives. I often go back in time and try to relive those beautiful and memorable days or even much older days but unlike you, do not or may be 'can not' translate them in to words. It need skill and art of writiing that at least I sadly lack. Yet inspired by you, I will certainly put some thing up though many may not have enough patience to go through it. But so what, if I want to write, I will do it; with outn bothering about the reaction/opinion of the people, if there are any.
Keep writing, I will be regular visitor to your site amd will comment what I feel; though, I am sure it will mostly be some thing good.
I will send you a photo of Nani- nanaji soon.
Keep writing Rachna, we all love to read your stories. I will print most of them and circulate to other older members of the family who do not have access to net.

It was nice reading, Rachna. It jockeyed my nostalgic memory of my good old childhood spent in the lap of Kotdwara. That Khoh river, Siddhabali Maharaj's temple, that long flight of stairs from the railway platform to the main station, my old alma mater Public Inter college (now GIC), our principal Bahukahndiji (his son retired a Brigadier, Jacku), teachers Dhaundiyalji, Aggarwalji, Bishtji and many others who made me worthy of what I am today, Jhanda Chowk where we friends used to gather and spend hours almost every evening, Frontier (Tea shop) where we shared one tea cup amongst three, Bhagat Pakoriwala, Kundan chholewala who gave us a chhole in pattal in half anna (three paise), Kishan Panwari and so on. We used to see Ramleela in Malviya park.

But now even the town of Kotdwara has changed. So much of crowd, unmanned traffic, dried up Khoh where water comes only in rainy season. So much has changed. That is the dynamics of universe, I suppose. (Vidhi ka vidhan bhi yahi hai) But, yeah, it is still better than metros and big cities. It still keeps the old touch alive. I am still somebody's Bhai Sahab, somebody's Tauji and Somebody's Chacha there and not Uncle.

Dear Rachna,
What to say??? You are one goood writer and please do try to publish your works a bit earlier than those 100 years..... you see i doubt that i am going to live that long!!(Even though a lot of people wish that for me, but some dont!so it balances out.....I am rambling)
You took me back to my childhood days where you know what's cooking in your neighbours kitchen!! Today the people would call me perverted but I knew most of the relatives of most of the people in my colony.Thats what happens in small towns and colonies situated away from these small towns.... oe what used to happen.
Keep up your writing!!! very fresh and entertaining....once in a while we all need a healthy dose of NOSTALGIA.

Think about it,not too futuristically for there's always an Angiography round a bend.2012 seems to be a good year. You will have to present something mind boggling//sketches/writeups/talks/what have you.Once you decide there's always someone to write the Logistics para.Whatssay You,Rachna.

Dear Rachana,
I liked your style of arranging & phrasing the English literature. I really enjoyed reading your creations. Well I was also a party to Mohan's gang while I had trekked to Roopkund in 2009 along with my children & wife. I had been to 30 high altitude trekking expeditions, when I had always preferred intensify my team by including some local people, mules, porters etc, but never did I ever come across as lovely & owning person like Mohan Singh Bisht. Though Roopkund, a very important trekking route, Mohan made it 10 fold more lovable, enjoyable & memorable.
It is fantastic to reveal your experience bouncing in your words submitted by you & I think, you are among the luckier ones who can express in words & phrases. I feel that even for the others, who do not know the procedure for expression, the trek had been equally memorable & lovable.
I stay in Kolkata & m with a small time business of manufacturing Industrial Burners & Heat exchangers. I just ca'nt resist mountains & m addicted to their variance. You may keep in touch with me by my cell: 09433008586 & email sphulingo@yahoo.co.in

Hey! I visited your webpage a while ago, and I came across your review on Vicky Donor (Titled a sperm story). It was a really good review, definitely one of the best I've read on an hindi movie.
I was curious to know your views on some of the mind-numbing atrocities taking place on women in India. And I came across your article in Deccan Herald,-'A killing obsession' (dated Jan 3, 2013). The article definitely echoed my views on this very sensitive subject. I believe the root cause could be illiteracy.
Long stories short, you have some skills! Keep writing :)

Thank you very much for such an amazing read‎ "The Brave - Param Vir Chakra Stories". I had read the Book by Gen Ian Cardozo too but your book had something different in it. The narration of your travels to each and every one of the PVC's native village or town and meeting up with their kin brings out a very strong emotion. My eyes turned moist whenever a family member shared a Story of their Brave and knowing that you come from family of the men in olive green, makes me think what thoughts you must have gathered on the way back after listening to their tale. These men wrote history with their blood and their act of valor has no parallels. I salute the mothers who gave birth to these Lion Hearts. Thank you very much for this amazing insight in the live of The Braves. After reading this book feel connected to them. I got the book from Flipkart yesterday and read it before retiring for the day. Thank you once Again.

Hi Rachna,
Read your book 'The brave Param Vir Chakra stories'. I love reading about the exploits of the Indian army and its men and have read loads of books. What stands out about yours is that you have been able to dig out intimate personal details much like Maj Gen Ian Cardozo did in his book 'Sinking of the INS Khukri'. Finished the book in one sitting :)

After reading your book "The Brave : Param Vir Chakra Stories" I felt all this while, I was mistaken about the term "Heroism". The true meaning can only be found in your book, which revolves around War Martyrs and Heroes. Brilliantly put together stories about the grit of this Brave Men,this book splendidly covers numerous aspects of them.I have a Question though: How hard was it for you to accomplish this task? .Kudos for your work and A Big Salute to All PVC winners. Just finished reading your book, "The Brave" from the copy sent by you to Col SS Cheema, Vrc. What a great reading! Loved the emotional part of the stories of each awardee, which has been put across by you in such a simple language. You have indeed done a yeo-man's service to the Armed Forces by highlighting the ruthless and tough conditions of the war and the feats of these brave soldiers for "Duty, Honor and Country". I hope you will continue to write about such audacious acts of the Defence Forces in the future too.

Hi!

I have just begun reading THE BRAVE. This beautiful book has been gifted to me by my grand daughter on my 80th birthday, 3 days ago.
Today I finished reading the Introduction. Your eyes were wet while going through the list of names of Rezang La martyrs. My eyes were filled with tears of respect for those Heroes while reading your lines.
Let me tell you right here that I like your writing style. But, there is one more reason for feeling attached to you. I felt connected the moment I read that you are married to a Sapper. My maternal grand father fought in World War I and my maternal uncle was in Ordnance. I was part of Bombay Sappers and retired as Subedar on 30 April 1981. I am proud that my Regiment earned the PVC through 2/Lieut RR Rane, in the first batch of PVC winners. Now I live in Jabalpur, the town that has the honour of earning 2 PVCs through CHM Abdul Hamid and Capt Vikram Batra.
Reading the complete book will take some time as I will go slowly through each page, feeling my personal presence on the scene of events described by you. So, you may have to wait for my final compliments.

Dear Ms Rachna, This is basically to compliment you on a really well- written book. I read 'The Brave' from cover to cover in one go and it made a great read. Most books on the subject had so far read like a military report. The human aspect was sorely missing. You bridged this gap and have singlehandedly performed a great service to the profession of arms in this country. For this alone you deserve our thanks.

Please keep up the good work. This is a genre that needs authors who can fire the imagination of our young. Maybe your book will inspire a new generation of bravehearts to keep the flag flying. Good Luck.

You did make a sincere attempt to place the heroic deeds of our Param Vir Chakra recipients in the correct perspective. So far so good. But somehow certain errors were overlooked in your book, The Brave, which I find rather disappointing and speaks volumes about the lack of competence of Penguin editors. You can only load your rifle with a single magazine at a time, not two or three. How can you even suggest otherwise, which is what your have done in some of the chapters. It is always A SECTION OF MEN, (ORs) not SECTION OF PEOPLE. The war with China is referred to as Sino-Indian War, not Indo-China war, which was the name of another country. Lt Col Thapa has himself stated in interviews that the Chinese bombarded his post at Sri Jap at 4:30 am on October 20, 1962, for two hours, before the actual attack. But you mention 6 am, which is not correct. You should have familiarized yourself with the basics of military writing, before attempting the project, even though you belong to an Army family. Journalists from TV channels including the NDTV and India today are poorly informed about military matters. Please stop referring to Indian Army as Indian armed forces, which is the bane of politicians, babus and journalists.

Many people were here before me...and so am I. I have just finished reading your short story..Munni Mausi. A nice read..but a little too quick..to jump from one place to another..I mean..a little less time to let the emotions..the words..do their magic. Before one memory could take control of the thread to be pulled and let the emotion take the center stage, another one came calling that it is my turn now. But overall, a nice one. May be the genre didn't allow you to devote more time or words. I especially liked the part where you tried to explain the life of sensitive people and how it is more beautiful. I can relate to that and believe me, it is almost exactly the same as i feel sometimes. Also, the part where you talk about sidhbali and Kotdwar. Being a pahari and the fact that i have visited these places many times, it suddenly made me feel like someone known to me is telling me this story.

I congratulate you on all the success that you have achieved so far and wish you to achieve a lot more in future.

P.S - I am not qualified in any way to criticize your work. I just wrote what i felt as a reader. I know I am talking about the same story, which was adjudged the winner in Commonwealth Short Story Competition. The judges there were surly more qualified than me. So request you to please don't feel bad about it...or me :-)

And the most important thing..I was toying with the idea of writing something for a long time. I even wrote a few songs, poems and something in hindi as well, but could never start a story. Now after reading this short story, I am determined to do so. So you and your story is the inspiration for me.

Thanks for being you...!!

Hello mam.
I have read 2 of your books, "The Brave" and " Stories of 1965 War."
I like to read war histories. Hence these books were the treat literally.
I had read one book on 1965 war before, by Lt.Gen. G.D.Bakshi. It was a great book, narrating the war start to end. But your stands out in its title, " Stories ...... "
When we read a detailed narration of a war as a whole, such books generally miss the stories of personal bravery of soldiers, small incidents in between, which add more depth to the incidents. Your books have gone into that Untouched area of incidental detailing. That was a great great experience to read.
If I can make a request, is there any possibility of you writing something on 1962 India - China war.
I know writing a war history is a great responsibility, involves tremendous hard work. And if its 1962 War, which has lot of mysteries under its wraps, it becomes more difficult.
But it will be great you can something on that.

Many have written so much, claiming to be unbiased. But if something comes from you, it will surely be unbiased. And I will be more than happy to have that copy.

Thank you so much for your generous words Ashish. They mean a lot to me. I must confess that Penguin had offered me a book on 1962 last year but i had to refuse it for two reasons. I had already decided to write on Kargil and needed one year to complete that book in time for 20 years of the war next year. And the second reason was that 1962 was a very sad war for our soldiers. They were sent unprepared, outnumbered and without proper winter clothing to fight a prepared enemy. It is mentally very disturbing to write such stories for me. But maybe later sometime, after i have taken a break from war stories, i ll think about coming back to it. Sorry about it.
Wishing you the best in life

Many many thanks to you for motivating and filling the thrill among us, specifically for defense optees by writing such a great book i read recently "SHOOT.DIVE.FLY", (In love with this book now)
The book clearly shines the perks of being in the forces and tells about what an officer is capable of in any worst or better situation.

The best line in the whole book from Story 2 "Tez bhago nahi to hamare liye ek bhi terrorist nahi bachega!", I was reading this story on my way to office in the cab and i laughed out my lungs, making my colleagues staring at me in a flabbergasted way.
Hahahahahaha.

Thank you so much mam, you are so beautiful and wish if I could meet you ever.

Ma'am! Greatings of the day. Somehow I laid my hand on your marvelous book ' The Brave- paramvir Chakra Stories'.

Nothing for fault finding but there is an ongoing trend in media that they retire the rank instead of the person despite being clearly outlined by AG branch on the issue e.g Maj Gen ABC (Retd) instead of Maj Gen( Retd) ABC. Since you are part of the great grand family namely Fauz, request if something could be done in the next editions of the book. Warm Regards

Honourable Mam,
I am a big fan of you.Your stories from different books touch my heart and i have also shared with my friends with encouraging thoughts. These stories are really heart-touching,amazing and adventurous i ever read.In my book shelf your books are kept on the top of it,always give a shiny look. After completing some of the books of you like Shoot Dive Fly & PVC stories I gave this book to my grandfather(SM,VSM) who is a retired Army personnel and fought many wars(1965,1971 e.t.c). Whenever he reads those stories he remembers the past duties same as the brave army officers have done in these books, sometimes the pages of the books get wet with his tears.Mam, You're the best writer for me because i have read bunch of stories but never like yours..The pictures of all the brave army officers is a part of my hanging wall pictures.Time will pass,Years will pass but Mam you will never vanished from my heart. You are a unique writer now, because the feats of gallantry of brave officers are only written in golden letter on your books.Sorry as the message gets to longer. Jai hind.

Hey,Rachna ma'am.! Gratitude and congratulations for all the books you've written.! Today ,I started reading one of your books "The brave" which I brought with me from my friend's place insisting that I would take care of the book until I read and deliver it back. It's an awesome ballad for all the brave, robust and gallant soldiers who immortalized their lives fighting wars for our existence, honour and motherland. Like your book very much, I had first read your introduction.. Acknowledgement page, dedication page..and then continued ahead.! The very first time read had invoked a feeling to visit your page on the internet, but then skip the idea to get through your book. But, it's been the whole day I've been reading your book with many regular pauses, and the last thing which couldn't hold me back was that my researches/personal queries ,questionares and experiences about the birth of Maj Karam Singh ,the first recipient of PVC award has been a little different. According to the wikipedia and some of the locals I had inquired there -Maj Karam Singh was born in Barnala district of Punjab,in the same village you have mentioned..but I guess you mistakenly mentioned Sangrur Instead of Barnala.
That's what I thought was necessary to point out to you.!
It's just a humble request that you consider revising your researches about this, and oblige.

Also,a very warm heatedly thank you for serving an army officer's family with love your whole life, and supporting them with the widespread love in your heart. This devotion of women like you, makes them serve well for our country. And,this is why they can only remember you women even at the time they live their last breathe.!
Gratitude and love for both of your children too.! I hope they become brave and skilled like their parents, you both.!

Now,when it's time to end my mail..I would end this telling a little about me too.!
I am just an ordinary guy,21 now..who was a die hard fan of the security forces and Indian army since childhood..but it was not in my fate well because I was never physically fit to be recruited by the army or any of the forces.! I too, aspire to write storues like you some day..and will also prepare for UPSC if possible in my near future.! It's a sheer pleasure writing to you.!

Jai hind.!

Hi Rachna.
I am a film maker and have been producing and directing adfilms for the past 20+ years for well known brands like Raymond, HUL, GSK, Hettich and many others. Have also written and directed a feature film in Marathi which was produced by NFDC. Was nominated for the best director award as well. I think that should be a brief introduction of myself...just to build credibility -:)

I am writing to you because I am planning to expand my horizons further into the OTT platform space and have been looking for some unusual and gritty stories about the courage and valour of our armed forces. I was lucky to have chanced upon your book "The Brave...Param Vir Chakra Stories".

I have read the first few stories on Somnath Sharma, Karam Singh and Ram Raghoba Rane. I must admit that your writing make the stories very captivating and being a film maker, the visuals start playing right in front of the eyes as I read the stories.

I feel these stories need to be told to a wider audience by producing a web series and recreating the sacrifices of these brave me who laid down their lives in the service of our nation. What I am more fascinated by is the fact that these brave men did not act like they did expecting a reward or citations...it was their commitment that drove them to do the impossible and they did that happily.

I could go and on but let me now make you a humble request. I would like to adapt these stories and create a web series for one of the leading OTT platforms. I would like to know if the rights of this book are available. I would like to start a conversation with you and your publisher and take this forward.

Let me also add that I would anyways be reading all the stories even if the rights are available or not. I say so since I like you writing style.

Look forward to your reply and I hope its a positive one.

Thank you

Yours truly

Uday Bhandarkar

My daughter is in grade VII and has had 'The Brave' as part of her curriculum this year as well as the year gone. While teaching her, I have had the honor to read your book. I can't tell you how inspiring it is to read your work. I hope that the book continues to tell our younger generation about the valor and bravery of our soldiers. I seriously hope it inspires many to take up this path to serve our great country.
Regards and best wishes,
